OvoFactor® is 4Life Research's patented concentrate of 4Life Transfer Factor bioactive immune peptides sourced from chicken egg yolk. It is one of three concentrates in the company's Tri-Factor® Formula, and it is the only one of the three that does not come from a cow. Where UltraFactor XF® and NanoFactor® are both fractions of bovine colostrum, OvoFactor is drawn from an entirely separate species, an entirely separate tissue, and an entirely separate evolutionary answer to the same problem.*
That problem is simple to state and difficult to solve. A newborn animal arrives with an immune system that has encountered nothing. Its mother's immune system has encountered a great deal. How does the second one brief the first? Mammals answer with milk. Birds cannot — and the workaround they evolved instead is the reason there is such a thing as an egg-yolk transfer factor ingredient at all.
The problem a bird has to solve
A cow hands her calf an immune briefing in the first hours after birth, through colostrum, into a gut that is briefly permeable enough to absorb it. The handover is live, direct, and it happens after the calf exists.
A hen has none of those options. There is no placenta feeding the embryo, no nursing after hatch, and — crucially — no way to reach the chick once the shell has formed around it. Everything the embryo will consume for the entire twenty-one days of incubation is already inside the egg on the day it is laid. Nutrition, water, and immunity all have to be pre-loaded.
So the hen packs early. While the yolk is still developing inside her ovary, antibodies are pulled out of her bloodstream and deposited into it. By the time the egg travels down the oviduct, picks up its albumen and gets its shell, the immune cargo is already sealed in the middle of it. The chick will draw on that reserve throughout incubation and hatch carrying its mother's antibody repertoire — a borrowed immune memory that gets it through its first vulnerable weeks until its own system comes online.
What is actually in a yolk
The molecule at the centre of this is immunoglobulin Y, almost always written IgY. It is the principal antibody class of birds, reptiles and amphibians, and it is the functional counterpart of mammalian IgG — the same job, a different evolutionary lineage, a slightly different shape.
The transfer route is not passive leakage. Research published in 2024 identified the receptor responsible, FcRY, expressed in the capillary endothelial cells of the ovarian follicle — a dedicated piece of cellular machinery whose function is to move IgY out of the hen's blood and into the growing yolk. This is an active, selective system that evolution built on purpose.
The quantities are substantial. Published figures put hen serum IgY at roughly 5 mg/mL, with yolk concentrations reported across a wide individual range and single yolks yielding on the order of 100 to 400 mg of IgY. Comparative studies across poultry breeds have found that roughly a quarter to a third of a parent flock's total IgY makes the journey through to the chicks.
The egg is also not one compartment. Different antibody classes are loaded at different points in the egg's assembly, and where they end up determines what they do:

This is the biological reason 4Life's ingredient definition specifies yolk and not simply egg. The yolk is where the systemic immune cargo lives. The white is a different consignment with a different destination.
Egg yolk is not OvoFactor
Now the distinction that governs this entire article — and the one that anyone reading about colostrum-derived or egg-derived immune ingredients should carry with them permanently.
The IgY numbers above describe the raw material. They do not describe the finished concentrate.
4Life's published definition of OvoFactor is specific: a patented concentrate of 4Life Transfer Factor bioactive immune peptides from chicken egg yolk. On the company's science page the wording is a patent-protected concentration of 4Life Transfer Factor proteins and other peptides from chicken egg yolk. The operative words are peptides and concentrate.
Antibodies are large molecules. Transfer factors, as the class has been understood since H. Sherwood Lawrence first described them in 1949, are small ones — Lawrence's original extract was dialyzable, meaning the active material passed through a membrane that held ordinary proteins back. Small has been the defining property of this molecular class from the first day. An egg-yolk transfer factor concentrate is therefore aiming at a low-molecular-weight fraction of the yolk, not at its abundant antibody load.*
This matters commercially as well as intellectually. The supplement market contains genuine IgY products — concentrated avian antibody preparations, sold as such. They are a different category pursuing different logic, and comparing their milligram figures to a peptide concentrate's is a category error in exactly the way that comparing whole-colostrum powders to UltraFactor XF is a category error. What "patented" means here — and what it does not
OvoFactor carries a distinction none of the other sources do: it is the component 4Life explicitly labels patented. UltraFactor and NanoFactor are described as proprietary concentrates. OvoFactor is described as patented, or patent-protected, in both the product-level ingredient list and the corporate science page.
Those two words are not synonyms, and the difference is worth understanding. Proprietary means a company regards something as its own — a formula, a process, a trade secret. It is an assertion of ownership that requires no public filing and no external examination. Patented means a government patent office examined a specific claim and granted a time-limited monopoly on it, published for anyone to read. One is a private position; the other is a public, checkable grant.
4Life states that it holds six U.S. patents and 38 international patents, with more pending. What the company does not do is publicly tie a specific numbered patent to the OvoFactor ingredient, so this article does not name one. Nor does a patent on a process or composition mean a health claim has been validated by anyone — patent examiners assess novelty, utility and non-obviousness, not clinical benefit. Those are separate systems that answer separate questions, and conflating them is one of the more common sleights of hand in supplement marketing.*
What can be said honestly is narrower and still meaningful: of the four transfer factor sources in Transfer Factor Max, the egg-yolk one is the source 4Life has taken to a patent office.
How OvoFactor made Tri-Factor possible
4Life launched in 1998 on a single source. Transfer Factor Classic — still sold today — is built on UltraFactor alone: colostrum, one fraction, one species.
The Tri-Factor® Formula is what happened when that expanded. Adding NanoFactor gave a second, finer fraction of the same colostrum. Adding OvoFactor gave something categorically different: a second species. Three concentrates, two animal sources — and the arithmetic behind the name.
The ingredient is therefore not a minor addition to a blend. It is the component that turned a single-source product into a multi-source one, and it has been in every Tri-Factor product since.

That last row is the practical consequence most people are actually looking for. Super Greens is vegan precisely because it carries no OvoFactor and no colostrum fraction — it is built on the plant source alone. The egg in the research record
There is a detail in the published literature that is easy to walk past, and it is worth stopping on.
The peer-reviewed paper behind 4Life's two-hour activation statement is Yu and colleagues, 2024, in Current Issues in Molecular Biology. Its title, in part: "…after Consuming a Nutraceutical Supplement Containing Colostrum- and Egg-Based Low-Molecular-Weight Peptides."
The egg-based half of that phrase is OvoFactor. The peer-reviewed title itself confirms two things this article has argued independently: that the formula studied contained an egg-derived component, and that the material in question is characterised as low-molecular-weight peptides — not antibodies.*
The honest limits apply, and they apply firmly. The study measured immune-related biomarkers and cytokine changes in a feasibility trial. It did not measure disease outcomes. It tested a finished formula, not OvoFactor in isolation — no published work here separates the egg component's contribution from the colostrum components'. The same is true of the stem cell mobilisation and neutrophil activation work: whole formula, laboratory markers, not ingredient-level attribution.*
What OvoFactor is not
Closing the doors explicitly, as we do on every ingredient piece.
- It is not an antibody or IgY product. The yolk's antibody load explains why researchers looked at yolk in the first place. It is not what the finished concentrate is made of.*
- It is not an egg-free ingredient. It comes from chicken egg yolk. Anyone with an egg allergy or sensitivity should read the current label in full and consult a healthcare provider before use — and Max also contains cow colostrum fractions, so the same applies to dairy sensitivity.
- It is not vegan. Not by any definition. The capsules are vegetable-derived; the contents are not. If a plant-only source is the requirement, PhytoFactor-carrying products are the relevant part of the catalogue.
- Its amount is not published. 4Life discloses the Tri-Factor total of 600 mg, not the split between the three concentrates. Any figure you see for OvoFactor specifically did not come from 4Life, and none is offered here.*
- Patented does not mean proven. A granted patent establishes novelty and non-obviousness of a process or composition. It is not a clinical endorsement and it is not a regulatory approval.*
- It is not a medicine. Transfer Factor Max is a dietary supplement intended to support normal immune function. Nothing here describes diagnosing, treating, curing or preventing any disease.*

What remains after all of that is still a genuinely good story, and it does not need embellishing. Two kingdoms, facing the same problem, arrived at two different solutions: one sends the briefing in milk after birth, the other seals it in a yolk beforehand. 4Life went looking in both places. The cow came first. The hen made it a blend.
