A transfer factor is a small molecule — a short chain of amino acids known as a peptide — that carries immunological information from one immune cell to another. He took white blood cells from a donor who had been exposed, broke the cells open, and filtered out everything large enough to be a cell or an antibody. Then he injected the remaining extract into a person who had never been exposed.

The recipient's immune system began reacting to tuberculin as though it had met the pathogen before. Something in that filtrate — too small to be an antibody, too small to be a cell — had carried immunological know-how from one person to another. Lawrence named it transfer factor, because that is exactly what it did: it transferred the factor of immunity.

The discovery was foundational. It established that immune information could exist in a molecule small enough to slip through every filter designed to catch cells and antibodies — and that this molecule could teach a naive immune system something it had never encountered.
