A transfer factor is a small molecule — a short chain of amino acids known as a peptide — that carries immunological information from one immune cell to another. Where the idea came from: 1949
At New York University School of Medicine, immunologist H. Sherwood Lawrence was studying how the body remembers a past exposure to tuberculosis. He took white blood cells from a donor who had been exposed, broke the cells open, and filtered out everything large enough to be a cell or an antibody. Then he injected the remaining extract into a person who had never been exposed.
The recipient's immune system began reacting to tuberculin as though it had met the pathogen before. Something in that filtrate — too small to be an antibody, too small to be a cell — had carried immunological know-how from one person to another. Lawrence named it transfer factor, because that is exactly what it did: it transferred the factor of immunity.
The discovery was foundational. It established that immune information could exist in a molecule small enough to slip through every filter designed to catch cells and antibodies — and that this molecule could teach a naive immune system something it had never encountered.
Transfer factor vs. the things it's often confused with
Because "immune support" is a crowded shelf, transfer factor gets mixed up with its neighbors. Here is how it actually differs.
How a transfer factor compares
- vs. a vitamin
- A vitamin is raw material the body consumes. A transfer factor is an information molecule that helps immune cells coordinate. Different jobs — which is why supplements often pair them.
- vs. an antibody
- Antibodies are large proteins that lock onto one specific target. Transfer factors are far smaller and act as messengers between cells rather than as target-locking weapons.
- vs. colostrum
- Colostrum is the whole first milk — antibodies, growth factors, and nutrients together. Transfer factors are one specific small-molecule fraction found within it.
- vs. a "booster"

Where transfer factors come from
Transfer factors are not exotic. Every mammal makes them, and every mammal passes them along. A mother transfers immune information to her newborn through colostrum — the thick, antibody-rich first milk produced in the days after birth. That is transfer factor doing its original, natural job: handing a brand-new immune system a starter set of lessons it did not have time to learn on its own.
The challenge was always sourcing. Lawrence's transfer factor came from human white blood cells, which is scientifically elegant and commercially impossible — you cannot build a product on donated blood. The history of the category is really the history of finding scalable sources.
