Colostrum is the first milk a mammal produces in the hours immediately after giving birth. What is actually in colostrum
Peer-reviewed dairy science has characterised bovine colostrum in considerable detail, and the composition data is genuinely striking. Colostrum is defined by its immunoglobulin load, and immunoglobulin G — IgG — dominates it, making up roughly 75 to 90 percent of colostral immunoglobulins at concentrations reported up to about 150 grams per litre. Alongside the antibodies sit lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase (antimicrobial proteins), lysozyme, growth factors, nucleosides, vitamins, oligosaccharides, and — the fraction this article is about — a population of small bioactive peptides.
Milk is also not one thing over time. Dairy researchers use a three-stage vocabulary, and the boundaries are conventional rather than arbitrary:

Why the window closes so fast
The short shelf life of colostrum is not a quirk. It is matched to a physiological window in the newborn that shuts almost as quickly.
For a brief period after birth, a calf's intestinal lining is permeable to large intact immunoglobulins — they can cross directly into the bloodstream rather than being digested into fragments. This is called passive transfer, and it is the reason a newborn calf that misses its colostrum is in real trouble. Both variables collapse in parallel over the first day: the gut's permeability falls, and the immunoglobulin concentration in the milk falls with it. Published reviews report that the first 24 hours of colostrum contains roughly 60 percent of all the IgG produced across the first four days.
That is the biological context for every colostrum ingredient on the market. The raw material is defined by a narrow collection window, which is why sourcing and timing matter, and why the industry treats colostrum as a genuinely limited agricultural input rather than a commodity dairy stream.
Colostrum is not transfer factor
Here is the distinction most colostrum marketing quietly blurs, and the one worth being precise about.
Colostrum is a whole food. It contains fats, sugars, caseins, whey proteins, antibodies, growth factors, and small peptides, all together. Transfer factors are one specific class of molecule found inside it: low-molecular-weight immune peptides that appear to function as messengers rather than as antibodies. When H. Sherwood Lawrence first described transfer factor in 1949, he was working with a dialyzable extract of white blood cells — meaning the active material was small enough to pass through a membrane that held proteins back. Small has been the defining property from the beginning.
The distinction has a practical consequence. A whole-colostrum supplement gives you the entire food, dominated by mass from the abundant components — which is to say, mostly not transfer factor. A concentrate like UltraFactor XF is aiming at a fraction that makes up a very small share of the original material. They are different products pursuing different logic, and comparing their milligram counts directly is a category error.*
It is also why the primer on transfer factors is worth reading alongside this piece: the ingredient class and the raw material are frequently used as synonyms, and they are not.
What ultrafiltration actually does
"Ultra-filtered" sounds like marketing vocabulary. It is not — it is a specific, boring, extremely well-established piece of process engineering, and its boringness is the point.
Membrane filtration works by pushing a liquid against a barrier perforated with pores of a controlled size. Molecules smaller than the pores pass through; molecules larger than the pores are held back. Filter categories are named by how fine the membrane is — microfiltration, then ultrafiltration, then nanofiltration, then reverse osmosis, each one tighter than the last. Ultrafiltration sits in the range that separates large proteins and fat globules from smaller peptides. Nanofiltration is tighter still, isolating a smaller molecular population.
Applied to colostrum, the effect is subtractive. Fats, caseins and the bulkiest proteins are held back. What comes through is enriched in the small immune peptides that were a minority component of the starting material. Nothing is synthesised, nothing is chemically added — the process removes what you are not after until what remains is concentrated in what you are.

Why two fractions from one raw material
A reasonable question: if UltraFactor XF and NanoFactor both come from cow colostrum, why carry both?
Because they are not the same fraction. 4Life describes UltraFactor as a concentrate of ultra-filtered transfer factor bioactive immune peptides, and NanoFactor as a concentrate of nano-filtered bioactive immune peptides — a tighter cut that isolates smaller molecules. Two different membranes applied to the same starting material yield two different populations.
